Dr. Nirma Perera
Post Doctoral Senior Research Officer The Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health
Nirma is a neuroscientist at the Florey Institute in Melbourne. She is part of a team that is working on finding an effective treatment for motor neuron disease (MND), a particularly devasting disease that can shorten a patient’s life span to 2-5 years. Her work involves harnessing a pathway that already exist in our cells called autophagy to see if its modulations can be used to “rescue” motoneurons as a possible treatment option. Nirma also investigates mechanisms that cause MND, which can help with understanding how to target treatment.
